Cardinal Joseph Cardijn

A poem about YCW's founder, Joseph Cardijn written by ex National and International Chaplain, Fr John Marsland:

CARDIJN

I never heard his voice, only his call
His urgent challenge, his prophetic cry
More than all the gold in the world
Young workers – not slaves, beasts of burden
I never met him, stood at his side
Never shared his lunch only his vision
His passionate dream, his dauntless faith
Together – we can conquer the world,
The contradictions, the half-truths, the hatred.
I never shook his hand, served his Mass
Never took his travelling bag, only his method
His remarkable insight, his deep simplicity.
Leaders – affirmed in dignity through action
Review, gospel mind and solidarity
I never saw him speak, stand at a rally
Never experienced his commanding presence, only the young
his distant apostles, his future builders
Missionaries – of the interior world
The factories, neighbourhoods, offices and homes,
I heard their voices, stood at their side
Took their hands, saw them speak,
Realised three’s a universe of love in fact
Enwrapped in each small seed like
See, judge and yes eternity worker act.
